MLK Day event set for Monday Jan. 20

The Boyd and Greenup Counites Branch of the NAACP will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 20.

The event, co-sponsored by Ashland Community and Technical College, will be at 10 a.m. at the Ashland Transportation Center. There will be singing by Christ Temple Church and the Singing Kernels, both of Ashland.

Bernice Henry, vice president of the local NAACP, will present a special honor, the Carol Jackson Diversity Award, in memory of Jackson, who was president of the NAACP at the time of her death, former Ashland Independent School Board member and community activist.

Keynote speaker will be Bishop Isaac Glover, member, elder administrative assistant, praise and worship leader and Bible teacher at New Jerusalem Christian Center in Ironton. Glover is also a 30-year retired CSX railroad conductor and remote-control engineer. Glover also served in the United States Armed Forces.

At age 54, Glover also with honors from Ashland Community and Technical College.
Glover has been married to his wife Siraprena Glover for 30 years and he is the father of five children and grandfather of 16 grandchildren.

Following the program, there will be a freedom march from the Transportation Center to First Presbyterian Church.
