Free elder abuse workshop

     ACTC’s Workforce Solutions and the FIVCO Elder Abuse Prevention Council are sponsoring a free elder abuse prevention workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
     The workshop is called “Don’t Be an Accidental Dealer,” and will cover topics such as how to properly store prescription medication in the home and how to dispose of it, as well as who would want to take that medication from an elderly person and why it’s a problem.
     “As a group we meet regularly to address the issue of elder abuse in the FIVCO area. Additionally, we have an annual training that targets the same issue,” said Bernard Onan, a leading member of the FIVCO Elder Abuse Prevention Council. “This year’s training is a twofold effort – one, to educate on how the elderly can unwittingly become an accidental drug dealer, and secondly, on how the drug epidemic can result in abuse scenarios that need to be prevented.”
     The workshop will be presented by Nancy Hale with Operation Unite and Ronne Nunley with Pathways.
     Two sessions will be offered at ACTC’s College Drive Campus in the Teleconference Room of the Learning Resource Center. Sessions will be from 10-11:30 a.m. 1-2:30 p.m. on Oct. 31. Participants will be awarded 1.5 social work CEU hours.
     This class is offered for free in cooperation with ACTC, the FIVCO Elder Abuse Prevention Council, the Kentucky Elder Justice Task Force, Morehead State University, Operation Unite, Pathways, Inc., and the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy.
