Register now for ACTC summer camps

     Ashland Community and Technical College is now registering children for its Sciensational Summer Camps.
     The camps are designed for ages 7-12 and encourage creativity, develop reasoning and teamwork skills and foster innovation while providing exciting, enjoyable activities that promote learning.
All camp are at ACTC’s Roberts Drive Campus and led by Craig McDavid, a science teacher at Fallsburg Elementary School.
     The first two camps, “White Light, Lasers, Galaxies and Then Some” and “Chemical Magic, Magical Microscopes, Rocks and Minerals,” will be June 25-29.
“White Light, Lasers, Galaxies and Then Some” meets from 9 a.m.-noon. Children will explore science as a fun and exciting process of investigation. Each day they will conduct experiments, discover the amazing and test their own ideas.
     They will learn about lasers and create a Laser Light Show. They will also conduct experiments with a laser pointer, lenses and mirrors. They will build and take home their own kaleidoscope, spectroscope, periscope and constellation watcher. They will watch the constellations and learn about all the planets as they take a 3-D adventure into outer space.
     “Chemical Magic, Magical Microscopes, Rocks and Minerals,” will meet from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Children will learn to make batteries from fruits or potatoes, make a crystal tree, work with invisible ink, work with powerful magnets, look at prepared slides using microscopes, learn about the different types of rocks and minerals, make glob from glue, use paper chromatography to separate colors and make dirty pennies turn clean and clean pennies turn green.
     The second round of camps will be July 16-20.
     “Creative Engineering Workshop” meets from 9 a.m.-noon. Children will work with an advanced three dimensional construction kit that is theirs to keep and take home. They will design and build simple or complex models of a vehicle, a robot or buildings. They will also get their own 3-volt geared motor to power up a moveable Radar Surveyor.
     “Electronic Lab” will meet from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Children will experiment and take home their own electronic lab kit. They will build a super race car engine sound, electric fan, motion detector, power microphone, trombone sounds, space war sounds and many more projects. They will also learn what direct current is and which materials conduct electricity, what happens when batteries are placed in series and what resistors and capacitors do.
