Youth Camps Feature Robots Electronics

Two new ACTC summer camps for youth ages nine to 15 will be held in July 7 to 11 at the College Drive Campus. The free camps are being offered through a Career Craze grant from Kentucky Lt. Governor Jerry Abramsons office. These camps are designed to show young people the types of well-paying high-demand technical / engineering careers that they can prepare for through community college programs.

The hands-on classes will be taught by Craig McDavid, a science teacher at Fallsburg Elementary School in Lawrence County, KY.

The Robotic Arm Science class will be held from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Students will learn about robotics while they design, build and command their own five motor robotic arm and then participate in Olympic style challenges and robot battles The robots will have 100 grams of lifting capacity and a search light for night operation. A five switch wired controller can be used to open and close a gripper, make vertical and horizontal reaching moves, and move the wrist, elbow and base.

The Electronic Lab class from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. will feature 30 different projects and experiments that are built with an electronic kit. The easy to understand experiments will explore the uses and possibilities of electronic circuits. Students may work at their own pace and will keep the reusable electronics kit. The kit includes an 80-page manual, solderless circuit board, battery snap, diode, timer, photocell, rectifier, potentiometer, switch 12 resistors, two capacitors, two light-emitting diodes and two transistors, Kids will be grouped by age.
