Workshop Gives Techniques for Teaching Citizenship

A free Workshop on Teaching Civics and Citizenship to Immigrants will be held October 28 in Ashland. The workshop is presented by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Office of Citizenship and is hosted by Ashland Community and Technical College in partnership with the Boyd County (KY) Library.

In order to enhance the skills needed to teach U.S. history, civics, and the naturalization process to immigrant students, the USCIS is offering free training workshops throughout the country. The October workshop is the only session scheduled so far this academic year in the Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia area.

The workshop is designed for adult educators, volunteers and teachers who help immigrants prepare for naturalization and citizenship. Topics will include background on the naturalization process, techniques for preparing students for the naturalization interview and test, and on overview of the fundamental principles of American democracy.

The workshop will be held Oct. 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Boyd County Public Library in downtown Ashland. Advance registration is required, and there will be no on site registration. Registrations will be accepted up to 10 business days in advance of the training date.

A registration form is available online at www.uscis.gov/teachertraining.
