    Teaching/Learning Conference Features Reading

    Reading for College, Reading for Life is the theme of the 18th annual Teaching / Learning Conference hosted by Ashland Community and Technical College.

    Our goals for this conference are to emphasize the joy of the reading life, to provide strategies and instruction to improve the reading experience and to spotlight reading as the heart of all learning, said Dr. Greg Adkins, ACTC President and CEO.

    The one-anda-half-day conference is designed for educators, administrators, counselors and students from all levels of academia.

    Keynote speaker Maureen Corrigan is a book critic for NPR's Fresh Air and a critic-in-residence and lecturer at Georgetown University. She is an associate editor of and contributor to Mystery and Suspense Writers (Scribner) and the winner of the 1999 Edgar Award for Criticism, presented by the Mystery Writers of America.

    Another keynote speaker is Dee Tadlock, Ph.D., cofounder of Read Right Systems., Inc. Her book, Read Right! Coaching Your Child to Excellence in Reading, was published by McGraw-Hill in 2005, and she has been published in such professional journals as Journal of Reading and Phi Delta Kappan.

    Concurrent sessions on both days will allow participants to select from a variety of reading-related topics.

    Conference participants will be also be able to enjoy an evening of Appalachian literature and music at Paramount Arts Center Banquet Hall. The event features Appalachian authors Chris Holbrook and Erik Reece and the local band Wiley Dew.

    The Teaching/Learning Conference is made possible through ACTC partnerships with other educational institutions. Partners as of August 31 are Bowling Green Technical College, Madisonville Community College, Mountwest Community amp; Technical College, Shawnee State University, and the following Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges: Big Sandy, Jefferson, Somerset and Southeast.

    The conference will be held October 21 and 22 at the College Drive Campus. The $99 conference fee includes program materials, refreshment breaks, continental breakfast on both days and lunch on Thursday. The student registration fee is $10.
