Super Sunday Promotes Education

ACTC will hold a Super Sunday college fair on February 23 at 2:30 p.m. at Christ Temple Church in Ashland. The fair is free and open to the public.

Super Sunday is a Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) initiative to increase the college-going rate of African-American students. All 16 KCTCS colleges are partnering with African-American churches to reach out to parents and students to promote higher education.

Dr. Kay Adkins, ACTC President amp; CEO, will speak about the role of parent involvement and early preparation in preparing for college. College representatives will share information on the college planning process, admissions, degree programs, financial aid, scholarships, university transfer and more.

The fair is designed for people who may be considering college for themselves or members of their family. For more information, contact Al Baker, ACTC Director of Cultural Diversity, 606-326-2422 or email: alvin.baker@kctcs.edu.

Super Sunday Hall of Fame

ACTC graduate Gwen Masterson has been named to the 2014 KCTCS Super Sunday Hall of Fame. The Hall of Famehighlights outstanding African-American alumni from the 16 KCTCS colleges.

After having my family, I knew I would one day fulfill my dream of being a cosmetologist, said Masterson, an Ashland resident. I was employed for Kings Daughters Medical Center for 10 years before I was injured and was unable to perform my job duties.

Someone had told me that ACTC had a wonderful cosmetology program, so I decided to go back to school to fulfill my dream, she said. I spent two years of completing my education at ACTC and went on to take my state boards and become a licensed Apprentice Cosmetologist.

Masterson graduated in Spring 2011 with a certificate in Cosmetology. She was a Deans List student with a 4.0 grade point average and was in the National Honor Society. She is now working at the New Attitude salon in Ashland and expects to finish requirements for the regular Cosmetologist license this year.

I loved going to ACTC and want to thank everyone there for how they helped me and continue to help other students, Masterson said. I encourage everyone to get the education they need for their own dreams.
