Phlebotomy Course Begins July 11

A Phlebotomy Course will begin at Ashland Community and Technical College July 11.

Phlebotomists are trained clinical laboratory technicians who collect blood samples for testing and examination by doctors and pathologists. Phlebotomist salaries are usually quite good, as they are trained to work with infectious specimens and understand methods of infection control and sterilization while using the latest techniques to draw blood samples from patients.

In Kentucky, the average starting wage for a Phlebotomist is $10.00 an hour or greater. Many employers of phlebotomists offer the same generous benefits packages as they do to other healthcare professions such as nurses.

This course prepares students to collect blood from patients or donors in hospitals, blood banks or clinics for analysis or other purposes. The eight week course includes standard precautions, record keeping, vital signs and therapeutic communication skills. Completers earn six college credits.

Classes will meet Monday through Thursday, July 11 to Sept. 1, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Technology Drive Campus which is located on the Industrial Parkway (KY67) that connects I-64 and US 23.
