LEGO Tournament Awards Announced

More the 200 youth on 26 teams competed in the FIRST LEGO League Regional Tournament hosted by Ashland Community and Technical College December 12 and 13 at the Technology Drive Campus.

FIRST LEGO is a robotics program designed to get youth ages nine to 14 excited about science and technology.

This tournament gives area students a hands-on opportunity to put STEM skills into action, said Karen Coburn, ACTC Manager of External Education Programs and event coordinator. They have to design, program, and troubleshoot their robots. They learn to work in teams, build their presentation skills, and use critical thinking to solve issues.

Its amazing how these young children are able to comprehend and use Programmable Logic Controls and servomotors with their robots. These are topics that we teach in electrical and rotating machinery classes at the college, said Jesse James, ACTC Electrical Technology Instructor and a tournament volunteer.

In addition to robot design and performance, the tournament included competitions on project presentation and FIRST LEGO core values. This is the only tournament in the FIVCO area, and the top six teams are eligible to advance to the State Tournament at Northern Kentucky University on February 7.

The six top teams were the LEGO Raiders from Greenup County 4-H, Nuts and Bolts from Holy Family, Techno Wizards from Charles Russell Elementary, Movers and Shakers from Holy Family, RAMBOTS from Worthington Elementary and the Access-O-Bots 5th graders from Boyd County.

As a parent and coach for First LEGO League, I also want to thank the college and all the volunteers who helped with the tournament this weekend. The kids had a ton of fun, said Vicki McGinnis, a coach for the LEGO Raiders team. It's an amazing opportunity to showcase the college, support STEM learning in our local students, and engage with the community.

Last years Tournament had 12 teams, and the growth to 26 teams this year shows that the LEGO program approach to science is definitely appealing to youth, Coburn said. We are hoping for even more growth next year.
