Learn Spanish This Fall

Ashland Community and Technical College is offering evening Spanish courses this fall to help students and area residents learn a second language.

Elementary Spanish I (SPA 101) is on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m., and Elementary Spanish II (SPA 201) is on Thursdays at 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. Both classes stress speaking, listening, reading and writing as target skills and emphasizes everyday language. Both classes include an overview of the culture of various Spanish-speaking countries.

For ACTC students, the courses can count as humanities requirements for the associate degree. The classes also will transfer to most major universities, many of which still require a foreign language.

About 35 million people in the US speak Spanish, including 80,000 in Kentucky. Learning Spanish could improve employment potential as well as enhance travel experience. It would also be helpful for emergency service workers who may be asked to serve individuals who have English as a second language.

Both four-credit Spanish classes will be held at the College Drive Campus. Instructor Shelia Duncan is an experienced high school teacher and part-time ACTC instructor. Fall classes start August 19, and August 5 is the application deadline. The application form is online at:ashland.kctcs.edu and can be submitted electronically.
