Learn computer, sewing, financial management skills and more

November classes at ACTC show the variety of educational opportunities offered to help area residents improve their skills and enrich their lives. Basic Computer amp; Internet

Learn basic computer and internet skills in this hands-on class scheduled for Tuesdays, Nov. 1 to 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Participants will learn to establish an email account, upload pictures from a camera, create files and folders, perform basic navigation and maintenance tasks and surf safely on the internet. The fee is $25, and participants should bring a notebook, highlighter and pen or pencil.

Basic Sewing

Basic Sewing is for those who want to learn or improve their sewing skills. Retired teacher and experienced seamstress Patti May will teach a variety of stitches and hemming techniques as well as how to make small repairs on garments. The class meets Tuesdays, Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 29, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., and the $35 fee includes materials.

Basic Finances

If you're struggling with job loss, bankruptcy, student loans, credit card debt or other financial challenges, there is a way to get your situation under control. This five-week class will explore practical strategies from Suze Ormans The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke.

Participants will learn about FICO scores, bankruptcy, mortgages, debt consolidation, money management techniques, how to buy a car and how to save when times are tight.

The class will meet from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Nov. 1 to Dec. 6, not including Thanksgiving week. The fee is $19, and purchase of the book, The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous amp; Broke, is recommended.

ACT Preparation

High school students can get ready for the important ACT college entrance test in a class designed to help them overcome test anxiety and improve test-taking skills. ACT scores are used by some colleges for course placement, academic advising or scholarship, financial aid or admissions decisions. Improving ACT scores can help with those decisions.

Participants will go over ACT type questions, learn test-taking tips, review English grammar and punctuation and practice working arithmetic and geometry problems. The instructors are Jason Shields, ACTC Information Systems Developer and David Pack, ACTC adjunct English instructor.

The 16-hour class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Nov. 7 to Dec. 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the College Drive Campus. The fee is $95, and students will need to purchase Barons Preparation for the ACT.

The Law and You

Legal Rights &; Responsibilities in a Nutshell is an eight-hour class that gives a general overview of the law and the legal system. Participants will better understand their rights and responsibilities and will be able make better informed decisions and choices.Topics include a general overview of civil law, disability rights, how to write a will and discrimination issues. Participants will be able to represent themselves, in limited situations, and draft and file related documents and pleadings.

Instructor Cynthia Elliott, is attorney at law with Elliott amp; Associates, a Business Law and Management Consulting firm in Ashland. The class meets Tuesdays, Nov. 1, 8, 15 and to 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and the fee is $25.
