Kentucky Power Grant Supports ACTC Alternative Energy Education

Ashland Community and Technical College has received a $16,000 grant from Kentucky Power to enhance education in alternative energy sources and applications. The grant will be used to purchase an Alternative Energy Trainer for the Electrical Technology Program.

Kentucky Power continues to be a valuable partner in supporting our efforts to provide education for the future, said Dr. Kay Adkins, ACTCs president and chief executive officer. This grant will help us prepare students to work with the next generation of electrical systems.

ACTCs Electrical Technology Program offers a variety of options for people seeking entry-level positions in industry and the building trades. Topics include the design and installation of industrial, commercial and residential wiring systems.

There is an increasing interest in alternative energy, and our students need to be prepared to work with systems that use a mixture of conventional, renewable and alternative energy systems, said Harold Henry, Electrical Technology Program coordinator. The trainer will help them better understand the costs and benefits involved in the development, manufacture, distribution and installation of solar and wind energy systems.

Greg Pauley, Kentucky Powers president and chief operating officer, said the grant is one way Kentucky Power is striving to be a partner for progress in eastern Kentucky.

Kentucky Power is critically aware of the need for strong programs to help students and adult learners overcome barriers to future employment, Pauley said. This grant represents our commitment to the region and will allow Ashland Community and Technical College to help those in Lawrence and surrounding counties be prepared for job opportunities, especially in weatherization and energy efficiency.
