IECE Can Help Build a Career

Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) offers a variety of options to people who want to work in child care or preschool programs.

Students can prepare for an immediate job while working on a longer term career, said Mary Lou Forman, ACTC Professor and Program Coordinator.

Students can build a career, one course at a time and one certificate at a time. Because there are so many choices for IECE employment, from pre-school assistant to instructor to director, students can start with one credential, get a job and then keep adding courses for more credentials and better jobs.

IECE offers six certificates: KY Child Care Provider, Child Care Assistant, Early Childhood Administrator, School Age Child Care, KY Early Childhood Certificate and IECE Technical.

The more certificates students earn, the more employable they are, Forman said. Certificate credits can be applied toward the diploma, and general education courses can be added to the diploma for the Associate in Applied Science degree.

For a long term goal, the associate degree can be transferred to Marshall University and other four-year institutions for a bachelors degree in education.

There are many job opportunities in the area, and employers know that our graduates will be quality teachers, said Forman. Area employers include child development centers, Head Start programs, family resource centers and preschool programs.
