Free Constitution Day Program September 17

Ashland Community and Technical College and Morehead State University at Ashland will celebrate Constitution Day on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with a program on the meaning of the U. S. Constitution.

The speaker is retired Lt. Col. Vance Huston, a Greenup resident who headed the ROTC at Greenup County High School from 1979 to 1988 after a 23 year career with the Marines. He will speak about the Underpinnings of the Constitution and the Basis of Our Freedoms.

During his years of military service, Huston flew 160 combat missions in Vietnam and then was chosen to be one of the pilots for Marine 1, the chopper assigned to the President of the United States. He flew Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson and was at Love Field in Dallas the day Kennedy was shot.

Originally from California, Huston found Greenup when he and his wife were looking for a quieter place to retire. He then began a second career of volunteer service, giving time at local correctional facilities, hospitals, churches and community service organizations. In 2012, he received the Kentucky Attorney General's Citizen Volunteer Award.

The free program is open to the public and will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the J. B. Sowards Theatre at the College Drive Campus. For more information, contact Dean Willie McCullough at ACTC, 606.326.2028, email: willie.mccullough@kctcs.edu.
