FIRST LEGO Teams Win State Awards

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL) teams from the Ashland Community and Technical College FIVCO area Regional Tournament won five awards in State Tournament held February 7 at Northern Kentucky University. The teams had qualified for state competition by scoring well in the Regional Tournament hosted by ACTC in December.

The Greenup 4H LEGO Raiders earned 2nd place in Project Research and 6th place in the Robotic Competition. The Boyd County 5th grade ACCESS-O-BOTS earned2nd place in Project Presentation. The Worthington Elementary RAMBOTS placed 18th overall in the Robotic Competition, and Holy Family Nuts amp; Bolts won the Inspiration Award.

FIRST LEGO is a robotics program designed to get youth ages nine to 14 excited about science and technology.ACTC hosts the regional tournament to encourage student participation in STEM activities that develop critical thinking, creativity and teamwork skills. Six teams from FIVCO were among a total of 47 teams that completed in the state Tournament.

Winning so many state awards in only the second year of our regional tournament is a tribute to the abilities of our youth and the dedication of their coaches, said Karen Coburn, ACTC Director of Workforce Solutions. ACTC stated the tournament in 2013 to bring the national FLL program to the FIVCO region. An anonymous donor provided startup money for new teams, and many area businesses and organizations have provided support for the tournament.
