ACTC offering fiber optics course

ACTC Workforce Solutions is once again offering a certified fiber optics course thank to a Kentucky Power Economic Advancement Program Grant.
This introductory course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a certified fiber optic technician (CFOT). The training combines theory and hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOT test that is sanctioned by the Fiber Optics Association (FOA), which is given and graded on the final day of class.
The course is a hybrid of online and in-person course work. In-person class days will be at ACTC's Technology Drive Campus from 4-8 p.m. on the following dates: March 26 and 27; and April 2, 3, 9 and 10.
This will be the third section of the class Workforce Solutions has offered. The previous two classes had a 100 percent pass rate. It is taught by ACTC's electrical technology instructor, Michael Tackett.
"I am positive that as our students graduate and seek employment in the electrical industry, they can put that on their resume and be able to tell a potential employer that they have the knowledge and hands-on ability to install fiber cables, install mechanical fiber connectors and perform the best technique in fiber splicing in the industry, this would help set them apart from other potential applicants seeking the same position," Tackett said. "All modern industrial plants today use fiber optics for their equipment and manufacturing communication needs."
The course introduces the student to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home) and distribution cabling. Students will learn how to identify fiber types; recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards.
This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities, and basic testing and troubleshooting. Anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician should attend this class.
The course fee is $535 and includes study materials and exam fees. Internet access is required for at-home coursework. Reading, videos and quizzes will be self-study. Labs will be conducted in-person.
Students must pass both the written and hands-on exams to successfully pass this course. The course fee also includes a one-year membership to the FOA.
