Community Education Offers Genealogy, Sewing, ACT Prep Classes

Short-term classes at ACTC in March can help area residents develop skills and expand their interests. From ACTC Preparation for high school students to genealogy classes for all ages, the classes provide learning opportunities to improve life skills. Genealogy the Basics and Beyond

People who want to start researching their family history can learn where and how to start in a Genealogy class held Saturdays, March 9 to 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at the ACTC Roberts Drive Campus.

Lori Shafer, Adult Service Librarian from Briggs Lawrence County Public Library, will cover ways to research a family tree, gather and record information, and document the sources used during research. By the end of the class, participants will be able to fill out a family group sheet and ancestry chart, know what resources are available to document history, conduct family interviews, use online databases, and conduct family history research.

Participants should bring a large 3-ring binder to class.Participants may also choose to purchase Family Tree Software online or at area retailers, but the software is not required for this class.

Irish Genealogy Class

The Luck of the Irish is a genealogy class for people who are already researching their family history but who need to find specific information about their Irish heritage. Lori Shafer, Adult Service Librarian from Briggs Lawrence County Public Library, will lead this class on researching ancestors from the Emerald Isle.

The class will meet Saturday, March 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon at the ACTC Roberts Drive Campus. The fee is $15, and enrollment is through ACTC Community Education.

Basic Sewing

Sewing skills can help you make minor repairs to garments, hem garments to fit, and add small touches to make your clothes special.

A Basic Sewing class will be held for those who are new to sewing or who want to improve their techniques. Retired teacher and experienced seamstress Patti May will cover variety of stitches and hemming techniques, and participants will learn to make small repairs on garments.

The class will be held Mondays, March 4 to 25, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Roberts Drive Campus. The $39 fee includes materials, and enrollment is through ACTC Community Education.

ACT Preparation

High school students can get ready for the April ACT college entrance test in a 16-hour class designed to help overcome test anxiety and improve test-taking skills.

Participants will go over ACT type questions, learn test-taking tips, review English grammar and punctuation and practice working arithmetic and geometry problems. The ACTC instructors are Jason Shields, Information Systems Developer and David Pack, adjunct English instructor.

The class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 19 to April 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the College Drive Campus.

The fee is $99, and students will need to purchase Barons Preparation for the ACT, available in the ACTC bookstore and other area or online bookstores. Enrollment is through ACTC Community Education.
