Apply by Nov. 1 for EMS-Paramedic Program

November 1 is the deadline to apply for ACTCs Emergency Medical Services Paramedic Program that begins next spring. The Paramedic Program prepares students to save lives. It is a career pathway for those entering the health care for the first time and also a way for EMTs to go to the next level.

While EMTs provide on-scene emergency care and transport the patient to a medical facility, paramedics provide additional pre-hospital care, including administering medications, interpreting EKGs and operating complex equipment

Jobs for EMTs and paramedics are projected to grow 35% from 2012-2022, according to the Kentucky Occupational Outlook to 2022.

Most employment is with ambulance services, fire and police departments and other emergency service providers. An EMT-Paramedic may go on to become a supervisor, operations manager, administrative director, or executive director of emergency services. Some may become instructors or dispatchers, go on into other health fields, or move into sales or marketing of emergency medical equipment.

Paramedic training can be completed in one and a half to two years at ACTC, and people must be an EMT before beginning the paramedic course. Applicants must also meet Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services application requirements

Students may earn either a certificate or Associate in Applied Science Degree. For both options, students take courses in anatomy amp; physiology, medical terminology, paramedic practice, clinical practical and management principles for healthcare.

The program meets state and national guidelines and has been accredited through theCommission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Graduates are eligible to take the national Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) exam.

This is a selective admissions program, and prospective students will need to submit both an ACTC application and a paramedic program application. Applications are available on line at: ashland.kctcs.edu under Academics, Programs of Study.
