ACTC Transfer Programs Save Money

July 17, 2012

With campuses close to home and lower tuition than at other colleges and universities in the area, Ashland Community and Technical College is a convenient and affordable starting point to a bachelors or higher degree.

ACTC fall tuition is $140 per credit hour, a lower rate than at other institutions in the area. By taking two years of classes at ACTC, students can save not only on tuition but on dorm fees, food fees and the other costs associated with living away from home.

ACTC students can prepare for transfer into more than 100 bachelor degree programs offered by four-year colleges and universities throughout the region. By working closely with an advisor, they can select courses that will transfer to their choice of institutions.

Transfer agreements are structured around general education courses in math, communication, science, social science and heritage/humanities. These courses are the major component of associate degrees at ACTC and can transfer as freshman and sophomore courses to four-year institutions

ACTCs Associate in Arts degree program prepares students for transfer into humanities or social science fields, including education and pre-law. An Associate in Science degree provides the background transfer into science fields, including pre-med and other health care specialties. ACTC also offers a specific pre-engineering curriculum for students seeking transfer in electrical, chemical, civil and other engineering fields.

ACTC students can transfer their general education courses to nearly every higher education institution in the country, or they can choose transfer through specific programs with area universities and colleges

For more information on transfer options at ACTC, contact Professor Bailey, 606-326-2028, 800-928-4256 ext. 62028, or email: danny.bailey@kctcs.edu.

Transfer Programs Work

Students choose transfer programs at ACTC for many of the same reasons that other students choose career programs at ACTC closeness to home, small classes, lower cost and quality of instruction.

ACTC laid the foundation for my degree in engineering through courses such as all of my calculus, chemistry, physics, and many of my general education courses, said Richard Delong, an ACTC student who transferred to the University of Kentucky in 2009 and graduated from UK this May with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

I am well pleased with the quality of education I received from ACTC as well as the relationships that I developed with the many friendly faculty and staff members, Delong said.

After getting out of the service, where he was an aircraft mechanic, the Fort Gay resident worked in a variety of mechanic jobs until he decided it was time to focus on a career. He started in ACTCs automotive program and then decided that rather than fix machines, he wanted to design them. He moved into the pre-engineering program, finished those courses and transferred to UK.

I would recommend ACTC to other transfer students for the lower tuition cost and the quality of attention that the faculty provide their students, said Delong. The day after he graduated from UK, he started work as a service engineer with Cummins, Inc., a major manufacturer and marketer of diesel engines.

Engineering is just one transfer field. ACTC students have transferred successfully into medical, business, education and dozens of arts and science fields.

A look at some 2012 ACTC graduates shows the diversity of transfer options available. Culinary Arts graduate Warren David Johnson, is transferring to the Dietician Program at Eastern Kentucky University. Jefferson J. Bryan, an Information Technology graduate, is transferring to Liberty University in education. Vanessa L. King earned both Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees and plans to transfer to Marshall University in pre-medicine.

Students can take general education classes at ACTC for transfer into programs ranging from Fine Arts to Nuclear Physics, Professor Bailey said. If they have a specific career goal, well help them select the appropriate courses for transfer.

"In most cases, students with an Associate in Arts or Science degree can transfer to their chosen in-state or out-of-state college or university as a junior," Bailey added.
