ACTC Science Fair Projects Win Regional Awards

Five projects from the ACTC/FIVCO Science and Engineering Fair received awards at Regional Science and Engineering Fair held February 20 at Northern Kentucky University (NKU).

The Ashland Community and Technical College Fair on February 5 had 72 entries from forth to twelfth grade students. The first and second place winners in grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12 were eligible to go on to the regional competition.

It is pretty astounding that five of the six projects we sent to the Regional Fair received awards, said Dr. Logan Minter, ACTC Instructor and Science Fair Director. Through our partnership with Toyota, we have been able to interest many students in STEM subjects and encourage them to achieve more each year.

Two projects received Regional Fair elementary school awards. Aslyn Fannin from Crabbe Elementary School won 2nd Place in Elementary Engineering and an Excellence Award from NKU in Physics, Geology & Engineering Technology. Katie Hannah and Cassidy Madden from McKell Elementary School won 2nd Place in Elementary Chemistry.

Holy Family Collegiate School students won three Regional Fair awards: Rylee Prichard and Jacob Salisbury - 3rd Place Junior (Middle School) Engineering; Braeden Whaley and Chloe DiGiorgio - 2nd Place in High School Physics & Astronomy, and Elizabeth Dean - 1st Place in High School Engineering. Dean also received Excellence Awards from the Yale Science & Engineering Association and the NKU Department of Physics, Geology & Engineering Technology.

The Fair is supported by a grant from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. and gifts from local organizations and individuals.
