ACTC Offers Non-credit Classes and Training

What would you like to learn? The Workforce Solutions Department at Ashland Community and Technical College is now planning next years schedule, and your class request can be included.

We wear many hats to serve individuals and businesses in the community, said Karen Coburn, Director of Workforce Solutions.

The Department offers a full spectrum of workforce education and development services for businesses, continuing education for professionals, short term health certificate programs and community education for individuals.

Professional development classes can include state mandated Continuing Education, license and exam preparation, and updates/training for professional groups. Free classes for early child care employees will be continued this fall, and there will be two classes on legal issues for human recourse professionals.

Fiber optics training will be offered later this fall, and we are working with Morehead State University to develop Continuing Education courses for social work professionals by spring, Coburn said. In addition, commercial drivers license training and short term certificate programs in Kentucky Medication Aide, State Registered Nurse Aide and Phlebotomy are available.

Online courses and career training programs are also offered through Ed2Go, with classes that begin every month.

New classes for adults and youth are determined by surveys of previous participants, input from instructors, and requests from individuals, groups, businesses and professional organizations. Community Education classes for adults can include personal interests and work skills, and youth classes can explore new subjects and interests.

Possible adult classes include Computer Skills in popular Microsoft programs, Quick Books for Business, Money Management, Retirement Planning, Preventing Identity Theft, Determining Your Personality Color, Jump Starting Your Career, Succeeding in Network Marketing and Marketing with Social Media.

Trainings for counseling professionals can include Reentry Employment Specialist Training and The Impact of Poverty on the Workplace.

Youth classes include ACT Preparation and driving instruction for teens. Workforce Solutions will sponsor the FIRST LEGO League tournament in December and will offer the Young Women LEAD Conference in October in cooperation with Toyota and community partners.

Classes can also be tailored to meet the needs of employers and organizations. Possible soft skills include leadership, marketing, team building, hiring and firing, preventing sexual harassment and time management. Training can be online or face-to-face on site or at one of our three campuses.
