ACTC Offers More than 100 Spring Online Courses

Online classes at Ashland Community and Technical College offer flexibility to students who must fit their class schedule into busy lives.

"The demand for online courses continues to increase each semester," said Dr. Carol Greene, ACTC Professor and Director of Distance Learning. "Because online courses fill up fast, anyone interested in enrolling this spring should complete the application process as soon as possible.

Before enrolling, students must first be admitted to ACTC. New students can complete admission requirements now for early orientation and registration. A complete spring schedule, including instructor contact information, and application forms are on the ACTC website at: ashland.kctcs.edu.

Online courses can be part of the college experience for many ACTC students. Many of the general education courses required for associate degrees are offered online, and some career programs have online course options.

The Information Technology Program offers an entirely on-line associate degree, and almost all Criminal Justice courses are offered online to offer access to working law enforcement professionals.

Online classes with openings as of November 20 are listed below.

Computer classes are Introduction to Computers, Computer Hardware and Software, Productivity Software, Internet Technologies, Web Page Development, Intro to Networking Concepts, Intro to Routing and Switching, Network Design and Support, Database Design Fundamentals, Security Fundamentals, MS Active Directory Services and MS Server Administration.

Communications and English classes are Intro to Communications, Intro to Intercultural Communication, Foundations of College Writing II, Writing I, Writing II, Intro to Literature and Creative Writing: Fiction

Criminal Justice courses are Intro to Criminal Justice , Intro to Corrections, Intro to Law Enforcement, Principles of Asset Protection, Intro to Criminalistics, Issues/Ethics in Criminal Justice, Community Corrections: Probations amp; Parole, Criminal Investigations, Delinquency and the Juvenile Justice System, Liability amp; Legal Issues, Criminal Law, Criminal Courtroom Procedures and Terrorism amp; Political Violence.

Education classes are Human Development amp; Learning, Teaching Exceptional Learners, Elementary School Literature, Foundations of Early Childhood Education, Approaches to Early Childhood Education Curriculum, Administration of Early Childhood Education, and Health, Safety and Nutrition.

Humanities classes include Intro to the Humanities, Intro to Cultural Anthropology, Renaissance through Modern Art History, Intro to Philosophy, Lands/Peoples of the Non-West World and History of Europe Post-17th Century.

Math and Economics classes are Pre-Algebra, Basic Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Applied Mathematics, College Algebra, Trigonometry, Differential Equations, Contemporary Economic Issues, Principles of Macroeconomics, and Statistics.

Social Science classes include American Government, World Politics, General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Intro to Comparative Religion, Intro to Sociology, The Family, Modern Social Problems, Development of Social Welfare and Inequality in Society.

Business courses include Managerial Accounting, Introduction to Quality Systems, Real Estate Principles I, Real Estate Law, and Personal/Organizational Leadership.

Health care related courses include Medical Terminology, Electronic Medical Records and Management Principles for Allied Health Providers

"Students taking online classes need to have good time management skills and be able to work independently," said Dr. Greene. Online courses require consistent access to Internet, and strong computer skills are important for success.

Courses use blogs, discussion boards, on-line text, video and voice tools, and other interactive tools. Tests and assignments are submitted on-line. Some classes require proctored exams which are taken on the ACTC campus. Students should discuss online classes with their advisor before enrolling.
