ACTC Offers Many Career Choices
If you want to get ready for a better job or new career, consider spring semester classes at Ashland Community and Technical College.
Even in a slow economy, there are high-paying jobs in fields that have openings for qualified people. Spring classes offer the opportunity to start preparing for those high demand jobs.
People with some college or an associates degree will make, on average, over $200,000 dollars more in the course of a lifetime than those who stop at a high school diploma or GED. Not only does a degree, certificate or diploma boost lifelong earning potential, it tells potential employers that a person is willing to put forth the effort to keep learning.
People who are looking for a new job or promotion can find a career program at ACTC that can be completed in about two years or less.
TRANSFER PROGRAMS
Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) degrees prepare you for transfer to a four-year college or university. Students can complete the same general requirements at ACTC that students at the four-year college or university are completing, but at an affordable cost and with a flexible schedule.
The AA degree is best suited for students whose major area is in the liberal arts, social sciences or pre-professional programs such as law and theology. The AS degree is designed for students in natural and biological science, engineering, mathematics or pre-professional health fields such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or veterinary.
Students can design an AA or AS program, with adviser assistance, for transfer to a specific college or university. The AA or AS degree can also help students seek employment in their fields while they work on a bachelors degree.
ASSOCIATE DEGREES
The Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) prepares students for careers immediately upon graduation.
AAS degrees include Applied Process Technologies, Business Administration, Culinary Arts, Criminal Justice, Fire/Rescue Science, Information Technology, Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education, Nursing, Office Systems Technology and Respiratory Care.
DIPLOMAS/CERTIFICATES
Diplomas and certificates give students technical skills for a specific industrial, manufacturing, health or public service job. These credentials can usually be completed in one to two years, and they provide training in the skills employers seek for entry-level jobs.
Business and education related fields include Business Administration, Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education and Office Systems Technology.
Health care fields are Associate Degree Nursing, Pharmacy Technology, Practical Nursing, Radiography, Respiratory Care-Advanced Level and Surgical Technology. ACTC also has a Health Science Technology Program to help people prepare for entry-level careers in a variety of healthcare fields and health-related services.
Public Service fields are Criminal Justice, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts and Fire/Rescue Science.
Manufacturing, industrial and transportation fields are Applied Process Technologies, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Automotive, Construction, Diesel, Electrical, Industrial Maintenance, Machine Tool and Welding technologies.
Future civil, chemical and mechanical engineers can start with pre-engineering courses for transfer into bachelors degree programs at area universities.
People who are unsure about a major field or who are planning to transfer for a bachelors degree may select general education courses that are required for associate degrees and nearly all bachelor's degrees.
APPLY BEFORE CHRISTMAS
January 3 is the application deadline for spring semester, and those who apply now can get the admissions process out of the way before the holidays.
Admission to ACTC requires filling out an application form, available on the web at ashland.kctcs.edu, and submitting an official copy of high school diploma or GED and transcripts from other colleges or universities attended.
If you are a first time college student who seeks a degree, diploma or certificate, you will also need to submit scores from the ACT or COMPASS test and go through orientation. Once you complete orientation, you will meet with an advisor and select your classes.
