    ACTC LEGO Tournament Winners Announced

    Seven teams from the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Regional Tournaments hosted by Ashland Community and Technical College will advance to the Kentucky FIRST LEGO tournament held February 6, 2016 at Northern Kentucky University.

    Selected on the basis of their scores in the robot performance, robot design, project and core values aspects of the competition, the LEGO teams going to state are the Clean Up Crew from Holy Family School, the LEGO Lions 5th Grade Access Gifted/Talented Team from Boyd County Middle School, Trash Busters from Holy Family School, the 6th Grade RoboFireCats from Boyd County Middle School, the Greenup County 4H LEGO Barbarians, the Comets from Oakview Elementary School and Burg Builders from Catlettsburg Elementary School.

    Twenty-five teams competed in the ACTC Tournaments held December 4 and 5 at the Technology Drive Campus. The teams of elementary and middle school students competed on the topic TRASH TREK to come up with innovation solutions for dealing with trash.

    Awards for individual aspects of the competition went to the following teams in the Friday tournament: Burg-O-Bots from Catlettsburg Elementary; Pioneers Teams #1 and #2 from Poage Elementary; Techno Wizards from Charles Russell Elementary; the AMS Tomcats Teams #1, #2, #3 and #4 from George Verity Middle School; ACCESS-N-GO, LEGO Lions and RoboFireCats from Boyd County Middle School; Tigers from Crabbe Elementary; TIGER-BOTS and Burg Builders from Cannonsburg Elementary; Wildcats from Hager Elementary and Comets from Oakview Elementary.

    Awards in the Saturday tournament went to the Mustangs from Ponderosa Elementary, Carter County 4H LEGO Wizards, Scrap Force from Russell-McDowell Intermediate School, Trash Busters and Clean-Up Crew from Holy Family, Greenup County 4H LEGO Barbarians and 4H LEGO Raiders, and the TechnoKats and Construct-O-Cats from Boyd County Middle School.

    This is the third year that ACTC has offered the tournaments to provide skill building opportunities for area youth in science technology, engineering and math. These are the only FIRST LEGO tournaments in the FIVCO area of Kentucky, and they are qualifying events for the state FLL tournament.

    Two tournaments were held this year to better accommodate the number of teams, and a total of 191 students and approximately 50 coaches, assistant coaches and mentors participated.

    Im very pleased with this years tournaments, and I love the way the excitement and participation continue to build with our area students, said Karen Coburn,Tournament Coordinator and ACTC Workforce Solutions Director.

    Providing our area students with access to these types of events broaden their horizons and help us develop strong future leaders for our region, Coburn said.Activities such as these can also contribute to the success of the SOAR initiative to enhance innovation and educational opportunities in the region.

    Next years 4th FIRST LEGO League Regional Qualifier Tournament is already being planned.
