ACTC Faculty and Staff Receive Awards
ACTC employees received several awards this spring that recognizefor excellence in the performance and service to the college.
New Horizons Awards
Three ACTC employees have received Awards of Excellence from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.
The annual awards recognize an outstanding administrative staff, support staff member and faculty members from each KCTCS college. The honorees are nominated by their colleges for innovative and significant achievements as well as service to students and community.
The awards were presented at the KCTCS New Horizons Conference held May 20 in Covington.
The Faculty Award went to Cindy Shelton, Professor of Mathematics. An Ashland resident and area native, Shelton started at the college in 2000. She earned an Associate of Science Degree from ACTC and transferred to Morehead State University for Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Education degrees.
Shelton is chair of both the Teaching Learning Excellence and Developmental Math committees and a member of the General Education Assessment Committee and the Developmental studies workgroup.
The Administrative Staff Award went to Sarah Diamond Burroway, Director of Grants and Contracts. A Flatwoods native and Russell High School graduate, she earned Associate in Applied Degrees in Telecommunications and Office Systems from the college. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Morehead State University and a Master of Science Degree in Strategic Leadership from Mountain State University in Beckley, WV.
Burroway has received ACTC Meritorious Service and Staff Excellence Awards and was a member of the KCTCS Presidents Leadership Seminar in 2011. She is a member of the College Council and Chair of the Staff Executive Council.
The Support Staff Award went to Kathy Riley, Executive Administrative Assistant in the Presidents Office. An Ashland resident she started at the college in 1997 and earned an ACTC Associate of Arts Degree in 2002. She was selected to the KCTCS Presidents leadership Seminar in 1999.
Riley is Recorder for the College Council, Staff Representative to the ACTC Board of Directors, a member of the Staff Executive Council and Treasurer for ACTCs chapter of American Association of Women in Community Colleges.
National Faculty Recognition
Ashchalew Mengistu, Associate Professor of Microbiology, was ACTCs nominee for the National Institute for Staff and Organization Development (NISOD) 2012-13 Teaching Excellence Award. Nominees were recognized at the NISOD annual Teaching and Leadership Excellence Conference held May 26-29 in Austin, Texas.
Mengistu, an Ashland resident, was nominated for the NISOD Award as a result of his selection for ACTCs first among peers Teaching Learning Excellence Award in fall of 2012. He has a Ph.D. from University of Wales College of Medicine.
