The Student Government Association (SGA) at Ashland Community and Technical College held a formal swearing in ceremony on Monday, September 23 to welcome two new members into office.
Abby Bingham was sworn in as SGA President, and sister Layla Bingham was sworn in as SGA Vice President.
“This is the second set of sisters that have been voted in by their peers since I have been at ACTC,” Steve Woodburn, ACTC Chief Student Affairs Officer shared in his opening remarks during the ceremony.
“It’s important to recognize and appreciate the significance of student leadership,” he continued. “They strive to better our institution, and I look forward to see what they achieve this school year.”
The ceremony was held in the Walthall Room in the ACTC Library, with friends, family, professors, and mentors in attendance.
The importance of student government at ACTC was recognized during the ceremony as a beacon of leadership, advocacy, and service.
The SGA at ACTC aims to foster an environment that promotes academic excellence, as well as community.
The students that were sworn in have been entrusted with the responsibility of representing ACTC student aspirations and concerns.
“As President of the Student Government Association, this role means a lot to me,” Abby shared. “I love finding new ways to get involved and help others, and SGA gives me the perfect chance to do that.”
Abby shared that SGA allows her to work directly with students to make their college experience better, as well as tackle issues that matter to the student body as a whole.
“I’m really excited to be a part of something that can make a real difference for the campus community,” she added.
“I’m overjoyed to be in this position where I can support other students,” Layla noted. “School can be stressful, and I think it’s so important to find ways to balance it all out. That’s exactly what I want to accomplish through my work with SGA.”
She shared that her goal as Vice President is to get more students involved and to gather their opinions on the events they plan.
“It’s all about building a sense of community and helping students feel more connected and supported during their time at ACTC,” she concluded.
