ACTC alumnus finds his path through lineworker program

Published on Nov 4, 2026

Ashland Community and Technical College (ACTC) will host an orientation for its upcoming lineworker program cohort at 6 p.m. on Nov. 9 at ACTC’s Transportation Education Center.

The orientation will give prospective students an opportunity to learn more about the program, funding opportunities, and the hands-on training that prepares graduates for careers in the electrical utility and communications industry.

For Layton Henry, ACTC lineworker program alumnus, a decision to explore the program has turned into a career as a groundman and apprentice lineman with Service Electric, working through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 369.

During his time at ACTC, Henry gained firsthand experience with the equipment, necessary skills, and physical demands of linework. Climbing poles and driving large utility trucks were among the experiences he found most valuable in preparing for the job, he says.

He says he also found that some of the most important lessons extended beyond the technical aspects of the profession.

“Always do your best work,” Henry said. “You don’t know who’s watching.”

That work ethic continues to serve him in an industry where learning never stops. Henry says one of the things he enjoys most about his career is learning something new every day.

He also stressed that safety and communication are essential responsibilities for anyone entering the field.

“Always ask questions,” he said. “Don’t do something if you don’t know if it’s safe or not.”

In addition to the hands-on instruction, Henry said the program’s instructors played an important role in preparing him for life in the industry and that their guidance offered insight into what students could expect beyond the classroom and in the real world.

According to Henry, completing the program also gave him the opportunity to build relationships that have continued beyond graduation. He says he has met many people and made lasting friendships throughout his experience.

For prospective students, he encourages approaching the program with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

Prospective students are encouraged to attend the orientation to explore career opportunities in linework and learn more about joining ACTC’s upcoming cohort.
