ASHLAND, Ky. – For Sean McDowell, the path from eastern Kentucky to a career in television news began right here at home.
A native of Ashland, McDowell is a graduate of Rose Hill Christian School.
He began his higher education journey at what was then Ashland Community College (ACC).
Like many students, affordability and flexibility were key factors in his decision.
“We realized we could find basic undergraduate credits for me there at a more affordable price,” McDowell said. “I worked closely with counselors to make sure my credits would transfer to Eastern Kentucky University.”
At ACC, McDowell focused on general studies and completing foundational academic coursework that would set him up for success at the university level.
More importantly, he credits the college with helping him grow beyond the classroom.
“I have such fond memories from ACTC,” he said. “The school helped me learn more than academics. It helped me learn to work with others and to be a strong, contributing member of our community.”
After completing his associate-level coursework, McDowell earned his bachelor’s degree from EKU and later attended graduate-level classes at Marshall University.
Before finishing his graduate program, he accepted a full-time reporting position—a move that launched his professional career in television news.
McDowell has now worked in TV journalism for years, navigating the fast-paced, ever-changing media industry. Today, he serves as a reporter for FOX4 in Kansas City, covering stories that inform and impact his community.
Looking back, McDowell encourages students to seriously consider starting their education at Ashland Community and Technical College.
“Do it,” he said. “It’s a great environment and an excellent place to start training toward the career you envision.”
