ACTC expands Medical Information Technology program with two new credentials
Published on Dec 4, 2025
ACTC’s Medical Information Technology (MIT) program has been approved to offer two new credentials starting in the spring 2026 term—a certificate in Telehealth and Medical Office Communications and a Medicolegal Administrative Assistant diploma.
According to Janet Thompson, MIT program coordinator, these new options position students at the forefront of two rapidly growing areas.
The telehealth certificate prepares graduates for the expanding world of virtual care, while the medicolegal administrative assistant diploma equips students with the specialized skills law offices and legal service providers need to manage medical records, claims, and documentation.
Thompson says this combination of medical knowledge and legal administrative training opens the door to an entirely new set of career opportunities for ACTC graduates.
The MIT program has several additional credential options for students in the program, including an associate in applied science degree, three diploma options, and six certificate options.
Thompson says most students in the program opt to earn every credential offered, as they are stackable and fit into a two-year progression timeline.
The entire MIT program is offered entirely online, offering flexibility for students while still providing an opportunity to get experience in the real world of medical administration.
Thompson says she is excited to see new growth in the MIT program.
“Telehealth is a fast-emerging field in healthcare, and opening up a new pathway to work in legal services is a great fit for what students are already learning to do in their coursework,” she says. “We strive to keep the MIT program up-to-date, relevant, and employer informed, giving students the best possible start on their new career journey.”
Samantha Nelson, MIT Advisory Board member and Physician Billing Manager for UK King’s Daughters, has been a long-standing supporter of the program, offering hands-on learning experiences through internships and hiring of ACTC graduates.
She says she is looking forward to seeing new growth and credential options.
“The MIT program develops exactly the skills our department needs: analytical thinking, accuracy, communication, and strong organizational habits,” Nelson said.
She added, “The students receive hands-on experience with coding systems, billing software, and compliance standards, which makes MIT graduates exceptionally well-prepared for our workflow. The addition of the two new credentials will greatly strengthen the talent pipeline of the program.”
The MIT program is open for enrollment year-round, with new students welcome to begin classes in the spring, summer, or fall.
A special virtual meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17 at 5:30 P.M. to learn more about what the MIT program can offer.
