ACTC Electrical program now offering associate in applied science degree

Published on Mar 20, 2025

Ashland Community and Technical College (ACTC) is proud to be enhancing its electrical technology program by transitioning from a diploma to an associate in applied science (AAS) degree, beginning in the Fall 2025 semester.

The program faculty along with its advisory committee, which is compromised of local business and industry representatives, recommended the change to provide students with a content-specific degree that better prepares them for careers in the electrical field.

This transition aligns with ACTC’s commitment to equipping students with both technical expertise and essential workplace skills, including communication, math, and science.

“This new degree offering is a direct response to the growing demand for skilled electricians in our region, providing students with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to thrive in the industry,” said Dr. Shannon Hankins, associate dean of technical education. “We are committed to preparing our students for successful careers and meeting our area’s workforce needs.”

To accommodate working students, the program will offer two foundational evening courses this fall: Circuits I and industrial safety. These courses provide a flexible option for those balancing employment while pursuing their education.

ACTC’s electrical technology program features state-of-the-art equipment, including PLCs, motor controls, and instrumentation training tools, ensuring students gain hands on experience with the latest industry technology.
