ACTC to offer new health science course starting spring 2025
Published on Dec 4, 2024
Ashland Community and Technical College (ACTC) will offer a new course for pre-nursing students and anyone interested in a career in healthcare beginning Spring 2025.
The course, NSG 100, Preparation for Nursing, is a three-credit hour in-person course taught by Carol Bowen, MSN, RN. It will be held on Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon at the College Drive Campus.
Terri Ratliff, ACTC professor and nursing program administrator, said the course was designed to help health science students prepare for whichever selective admissions program they choose.
“NSG 100 is not just for pre-nursing students, but any student interested in enrolling in a specific health science program such as nursing, surgical technology, medical assisting, radiography, or medical information technology,” Ratliff said.
The course will introduce students to the healthcare system and teach time management and study habits essential for success in these demanding programs.
Ratliff encourages any student pursuing a healthcare career to take the course.
“It is not just an introduction to nursing, but other areas in healthcare,” she said. “Learning about different areas in the healthcare system can help them decide in which direction they wish to go. The course curriculum focuses on organization, time management, and test taking skills.”
Upon completing the course, students will be able to identify factors that can enhance or hinder a nursing student’s success, define professionalism, and understand the relationship between professional nursing and the scope of nursing practice. They will also learn how to identify their learning style and use strategies to improve time resource management.
