Ashland Community and Technical College (ACTC) is proud to welcome Deputy Marty Hoffman with the Boyd County Sherriff’s Department as the new school resource officer (SRO).
“I have been a patrol officer and a shift supervisor over the course of the last 20 years,” Hoffman said. “I believe that being an SRO is a completely different aspect of policing, and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead and to learning new things as not only a sheriff’s deputy but also an SRO for ACTC.”
Hoffman was offered the position by Sherrif Jamie Reihs following the retirement of former Deputy (SRO) Tim Wallin. With his extensive experience in law enforcement, Hoffman is eager to embrace the responsibilities of his new role.
Hoffman grew up in Ashland, attending Rose Hill Christian School during his elementary school years. He attended his middle school years in Boyd County Schools before transferring to Paul Blazer High School, where he attended until he graduated in 1997.
He began his law enforcement career at Raceland Police Department in May 2003, and worked there for two years. During that time, he attended the basic training academy. He began the Academy in May 2004 and graduated in September of the same year. He transferred to Flatwoods Police Department in November of 2005 where he stayed until March 2023. From there, he transferred to the City of Bellefonte Police Department where he worked before accepting the Boyd County Sherriff’s Department SRO position at ACTC.
“I believe it was a great opportunity for me to transition from the City of Bellefonte Police to the Boyd County Sheriff’s Department as the SRO for ACTC,” Hoffman said. “I feel honored that Sherriff Jamie Reihs chose me for the position to represent the department as the SRO for the college.”
He noted that throughout his career, he advanced through the ranks of Patrolman and was promoted to Sergeant in 2016 where he proceeded to go through several supervisor training courses, including the Academy of Police Supervision, Collaborative Leadership, and Current Leadership Issues for Mid-Level Executives. He went on to be promoted to Lieutenant as well.
“With over 20 years of experience in law enforcement and the various courses I’ve taken over the years, I’ll aim to help keep the faculty, staff, and students in a safe working and learning environment by utilizing the skills and knowledge I’ve gained over the years,” Hoffman said.
He shared that he’s looking forward to engaging with students and staff and will be keeping an open-door policy for anyone to be able to discuss any problems or concerns.
Hoffman plans to maintain a close relationship with the on-campus security guards and will be willing and able to help maintain and keep a safe campus for staff, faculty, and students.
“There is a poster on my office door at the ACTC College Drive Campus, Roberts Drive Campus, and Technology Drive Campus that has phone numbers and email address to contact me or the security department,” Hoffman concluded. “As the saying goes, if you see something, say something."
