ACTC launches organization aimed at educating about addiction

September 16, 2022

ASHLAND, Ky. – Ashland Community and Technical College is excited to announce the launch of a new organization on campus.

Addicts and Allies for Education helps raise awareness and educate allies with community outreach, provide a safe space, workshops, and resources for addicts as well as allies.

“The support from ACTC faculty, staff, and students to start the Addicts and Allies for Education organization has been outstanding,” said Janet Thompson, club advisor.  “Just about everyone in our community is affected by the struggle of addiction.  The goal of this organization is to bring people together to raise awareness and reduce the stigma that comes with the word ‘addict.’”

The meetings are open to the general public, and anyone interested in joining can e-mail Janet.Thompson@kctcs.edu to RSVP.  During the monthly meetings there will be speakers from members of ACTC and the community, information about different resources for mental health and addiction, and plans for upcoming club-sponsored activities.

The next meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 4 P.M. on Microsoft Teams.

The group is also planning an event called “Addiction Awareness Walk” on Saturday, November 5 at 10 AM at Technology Drive Campus.  During this event, campus and community members can come together and walk a lap around the campus to raise awareness for addiction issues.
