Stepping Stones Program | ACTC

Stepping Stones Program

ACTC’s Stepping Stones program was launched in 2001 to meet the growing needs of individuals experiencing hair loss due to cancer. The program provides free, personalized support for clients and their loved ones, including education on proper fitting techniques, and care instructions to maintain wig quality and appearance.

Developed as a natural extension of the Cosmetology Program at ACTC, Stepping Stones gives students the opportunity to apply their training in a real-world, service-oriented setting. The program serves as both an educational tool and a vital community resource. Stepping Stones operates entirely through the generosity of community donations and the support of volunteers.

TYPES OF SERVICES

  • Free wigs are offered to anyone with any type of hair loss. We encourage those with hair loss to take more than one wig so that one is always clean and available to wear.
  • Both human hair and synthetic hair wigs are available. We will share the advantages and disadvantages of both.
  • A private area is available for services, such as shaving of head and wig fitting.
  • Free services on wigs, whether they are acquired through Stepping Stones or not, include repair, shaping, conditioning, styling and coloring, as appropriate.
  • Education on the type of wig to choose and how to care for a wig is provided by the cosmetology instructors. Services to clean, fit and style the wigs are provided by cosmetology students under the supervision of instructors.

HOW TO DONATE

  • Donations of wigs and hair pieces (“additions”) are sought from people who no longer need them. These “additions” are available free of charge to those who are suffering hair loss from illness or medical treatments.
  • Cash and wig donations are being accepted. For information about donating, contact Mourine Smith, cosmetology program coordinator, at 606-326-2487.

TREATING YOU WITH RESPECT

Remember, there is no single reason why people wear wigs. Whether you have severe damage to the hair, suffer effects from illness or just want to try something new, you have many options for addressing hair loss or that new change.

We are trained and ready to work with you. Our goal is to help you get through this period of your life with the dignity and privacy you deserve.

You will be treated with care and concern by our students. They are trained to work with wigs of all types and they work under the direction of highly-qualified and credentialed instructors.

For assistance in finding the right wigs or for general information about wigs and their care, contact ACTC’S cosmetology department.
