GE 101 To assist new freshmen in making the transition to college, SSS offers a three-credit course, "Strategies for Academic Success", which promotes academic success in the first year and beyond. The course helps students improve learning and study strategies, develop creative and critical thinking skills, and gain access to campus resources.
Academic AdvisingSSS Academic Advising staff assists students in planning their degree programs and monitoring their academic progress. The advisors can answer questions about degree requirements and guide students through the process of selecting majors and setting career goals. In addition, the advisors keep students informed about various services that are available on campus to support their needs.
Peer TutoringThe SSS program offers intensive tutoring both for academic courses and for study strategies. Tutoring is also available to help students prepare to take examinations such as the COMPASS. SSS tutors help students to learn course content and to improve their test-preparation methods and test-taking strategies.
First Year Experience All new college students accepted into the SSS program will participate in a First Year Experience which involves six weeks of peer mentoring to assist with their adjustments to college. They must also meet regularly with their SSS Advisor and take an Academic Strategies class during the second semester. Career, transfer, and leadership counseling will also be part of the First Year Experience.
WorkshopsEvery semester, SSS offers a wide variety of informative programs. Some typical topics include basic computer use instruction, resume and interview skills, and applying to the nursing program.
Cultural EnrichmentThe SSS program offers participants the opportunity to attend numerous events on and off campus that stimulate thought and promote cultural appreciation. Some events that we have participated in are COSI, Mary Todd Lincoln House, and Huntington Museum of Art.
Career/Personal GuidanceSSS Advisors will assist students with career interest and assessments using Myers Briggs and Career Outlook. Assistance with resumes and cover letters is provided. SSS Advisors assist students with personal issues through referral to local agencies that can assist them.
Equipment LoanThe SSS program provides laptop computers, graphing and scientific calculators, and tape recorders for loan to all SSS students. This equipment checkout is for a limited time only, not for the entire semester.
Copier ServicesAll SSS students are allowed to make 150 copies each semester for academic courses. The copies must be related to a class that they are taking.
