How do I Become an SI Leader?

The Title III Grant, Closing the Education Gap in Appalachian Kentucky, is looking for a few good students to work as Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders.

To qualify for this position, applicants should be currently enrolled full time students in good academic standing.  SI leaders will learn skills that will benefit them in the classroom as well as in the workforce.  In addition, they will provide a valuable service to the students enrolled in identified classes. Positions are available in the following courses:  ART 100, ENC 090, ENC 091, MAT 55, MAT 65, MAT 150 BIO 137, BIO 139, CHE 160/170.  These positions will be on the CDC campus and the TDC campus.  

This is a paid position.  Students will work approximately nine hours weekly.

 The SI Leader.......

  • Has had the class before and earned an "A"
  • Attends class lectures
  • Is trained in the most effective college level learning and study strategies
  • Shows you how to learn the course content in SI classes
  • Provides leadership structure to the study session
  • Models effective note-taking techniques and the crucial self-testing strategies
  • Models needed thinking and problem-solving techniques
  • Empowers students to become independent learners who can earn A's on their own

All current students will be notified via email when the application process for becoming an SI leader opens. 

 

To apply:

  • Download an application from this website or obtain an application from the SI Specialist (room G 216).
  • Turn in completed application with current transcript and upcoming schedule of classes to Becky Gehringer, SI Specialist in room G 216.
  • All SI leaders attend twelve hours of initial training prior to the beginning of the semester
  • All SI leaders meet each Friday at 10:00am for additional training.  Your schedule must allow for this meeting.
  • To be considered to be an SI leader you must have completed the course for which you are applying with a high B or A.
  • SI Specialist will call you to set up an interview time.  Make sure you include your email address, cell phone number and home phone number on your application.  Check to make sure you included your Student ID number.
