North American Racing Academy Reaches 2,000 Win Milestone
Jun 29, 2013 - | 02:34 PM -
LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 29, 2013) – Jockeys who have attended the North American Racing Academy at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) were on fire Friday, June 28th winning a total of eight races at three different race tracks, capped by a five win night for apprentice jockey Dylan Davis at Indiana Downs. Davis’ second win on the card was the 2,000th winner ridden by a NARA jockey since the academy was launched in 2006. The 2,000 win milestone was reached when Davis, who began his riding career in 2012, booted home Luzianna Man for trainer Charlie LoPresti in the sixth race, a one mile & 70 yard turf event for allowance level horses.
Davis’ father Robbie Davis was a top jockey during the 1980’s in both New York and California winning over 3,400 races. His sister Jacqueline – a NARA graduate herself – is currently fourth in the jockey standings at Suffolk Downs Racetrack in East Boston, MA where she has been the second-leading rider the past three years.
Since its launch in 2006 BCTC-NARA has seen 51 out of 82 enrolled students join the equine industry workforce after preparing them for careers tailored to the care, training and riding of racehorses with 20 going on to careers as professional jockeys at tracks across North America.
Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron, who has been with BCTC-NARA since the beginning, had this to say about the 2000th win: “Words cannot express how incredibly proud I am of all of our graduates who have gone on to become jockeys, exercise riders, grooms, foremen, farm managers and broodmare managers. They have demonstrated the commitment and passion it takes to work with these magnificent thoroughbreds. This is just the beginning of more wonderful things to come in the years ahead. We are in the process of establishing student exchange programs with other schools like NARA around the world. I believe NARA/BCTC is providing a much-needed resource for experienced, qualified labor for the thoroughbred industry. Onward and upward we go…”
Added BCTC President Augusta Julian: "We couldn’t be prouder of these young men and women who are contributing so much to the racing and breeding industries. My congratulations go to Dylan Davis but also to the many graduates since 2006 who got us to this important milestone.”
Originally launched by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System NARA is now housed at BCTC and remains the most successful accredited career and training program offering one certificate and two year associates degrees in support of the horse racing and breeding industries.
